Classically trained pianist, multi-awarded jazz soloist and composer, Marco Apicella is a multifaceted musician whose career spanned between Europe and the USA, where he currently lives based in Los Angeles.

Born and raised in Rome, Italy, Marco showed a strong interest for music at the age of 10 and was later accepted at the prestigious Conservatory of Rome to study classical piano.

In his teenage years he developed a strong passion towards Rock, Pop, Funk and other modern generes which brought him to discover Jazz.

In 2013 Marco moved to Rotterdam, Holland, to study his bachelor in Jazz Piano at Codarts, University For The Arts, where he was mentored by some of the best jazz pianists in the nation and in Europe.

During his time in Holland he played in many different projects both as a sideman and as a band leader. His project “Marco Apicella Trio”, with which he won the 1st prize at the “Leiden Boonekamp Jazz Award 2017” (a competition between the best bands emerging from the Dutch’s conservatories) sees him as pianist, composer and bandleader.

With his trio Marco performed in some of the best known venues of the nation, and was selected to play at the North Sea Jazz Festival 2017, one of the most famous jazz festivals in the world.

The most innovative and interesting project he has been part of is perhaps the DMC (Dutch Music Community). The band is a “community” of musicians chosen among the best of the country, and their performances are based on collective improvisations and instant composing. Is following this philosophy that in 2015 the band released their first album: DMC One, composed and recorded in a single studio session of 3 consecutive days. With the DMC Marco had the chance to share the stage with world famous artists such as Marcus Miller, Snarky Puppy, Jason Lindner, Ed Motta and others.

After graduating “Cum Laude” in jazz piano from Codarts (University for the Arts) he moved to Los Angeles where he earned his Masters of Music (also “Cum Laude”) in Jazz Studies at the University Of Southern California. Here Marco had the incredible opportunity to learn from and collaborate with world renowned artists such as Alan Pasqua, Russel Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, Vince Mendoza and Peter Erskine.

Besides his performing career, Marco is an active producer in Los Angeles and he collaborates with local and international artists.
